After the launching of the Encore, the leaders of American Motors decide to study a convertible version of the Alliance, this version was only made for the American market. Renault will never import this model into Europe for economic reasons.
Alliance convertible is manufactured in a short line, a “by-pass” of an hundred meters length. In this line, the shell of a 2-door Alliance (also unknown model in France) is cut off, reinforced and replaced in the main line to receive the common parts of all the range. It's the first time that a convertible is build in that way in America. Renault AMC plans to sells 7 to 8.000 convertible by year. Only 10.625 convertibles leaved the Kenosha plant between 1985 and 1987.
